A marathon effort for ROCOL team members

Two members of the ROCOL customer service team will tackle a gruelling 26.5 mile walk this December to raise money for MND Association.

Starting out from Oulton, Dawn Thornton, Sally Willoughby and 95 others, who are all part of the Oulton Community Sports Club, will walk to Huddersfield as they look to raise as much as possible for the charity.

Event organiser Andy Williamson said, “Samantha Longley, one of the volunteers at the sports club, has a cousin who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2018. She wanted to do something to show her support and decided on a walk, as it allows for social distancing whilst taking part.

“We put it out to the club asking who would be interested, and the response has been fantastic. This is partly down the person Sam is and people wanting to offer their support, and partly because MND is a big topic this year and people want to support the cause in any way that they can, even if that does mean walking over 26 miles in the middle of winter.”

The route is relatively flat along river and canal paths, although the last mile and a half is all up a steep incline.

Andy added, “Some people have been training hard and getting the miles in. Personally, my training hasn’t been ideal, but I’m sure that the spirit of the group will help carry me through.

Dawn said, “The team has a goal of raising £5000, but I’d love to smash that and raise as much as possible.”

The team have set up a Just Giving page for donations. It can be found here.
